Description
Lisianthus is a stunning and delicate flower known for its beautiful, rose-like blooms. The flowers are available in a variety of colours, including shades of pink, purple, blue, white, and bicoloured varieties. Plants typically reach heights of 30β90 cm and display elongated green leaves. Each stem can bear multiple flower buds, opening sequentially over time, which prolongs their blooming period.
Cultivation
Climate
Lisianthus thrives in moderate climates and prefers full sun to partial shade. It is sensitive to frost, so it should be planted in spring or after the last frost date in colder regions.
Soil
Use well-drained soil rich in organic matter. A pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 is optimal for growth.
Watering
Maintain consistent moisture during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging. Water at the base of the plant to prevent fungal infections.
Fertilisation
Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. An initial application at planting time is also recommended.
Propagation
Lisianthus is best propagated from seeds, although seedlings can take a long time to mature. Seeds can be sown indoors 10-12 weeks before the last frost date or directly outdoors once the danger of frost has passed.
Pests and Diseases
Common pests include aphids, thrips, and spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil for control. Diseases such as root rot and powdery mildew can be problematic; ensure proper air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimize risk.
Harvesting
Lisianthus should be harvested when the buds are still tightly closed, with the outer petals just starting to show colour. Cut stems early in the morning or late in the afternoon to minimise stress on the plants.
Care Post-Harvest
Watering: Place fresh cuts in water immediately.
Vases: Use clean vases and provide sufficient water to avoid wilting.
Environment: Keep away from direct sunlight and drafts to prolong vase life, which can last from 7 to 14 days.
